Top 10 Reasons to Adopt an Older Dog

(Adapted from the Senior Dogs Project www.srdogs.com)

  1. Older dogs are most likely housetrained so you won’t have to go through teaching him house manners like you would a puppy.

  2. Older dogs are out of the puppy teething stage and won’t chew your shoes and furniture.

  3. Older dogs DO learn the house quickly because they are settled and can focus.

  4. Older dogs get it when you say “no” because they’ve heard it all before.

  5. Many older dogs will settle in easily to your routine because they’ve learned what it takes to get along and become a member of the pack.

  6. Older dogs are cuddly. They’ve stopped being so bouncy.

  7. What you see is what you get.  Their personalities are set.

  8. Older dogs are ready for car trips, hiking or whatever else you like to do.

  9. Because they’re not as demanding as puppies the older dog can be counted on to rest quietly while you do something on your own.

  10. Want a good night’s sleep? An older dog won’t generally need nighttime feedings, comforting or potty breaks through the night.
